Red Hat, Ubuntu, and Arch Linux patch Linux kernel exploit

Canonical, Red Hat, and Arch Linux have released patches that fix a vulnerability in Linux kernels 2.6.39 and above that enable attackers to gain system root access. The distro patches followed a kernel patch to fix the vulnerability, but proof-of-concept exploit code examples have already been posted.

Installing an older kernel

Hi,

I must be stupid or something, but when I installed my version of Debian I got asked in the end of the installation which kernel I wanted to use.

I choosed 3.0.0. However, I would like to go back to 2.6.x again.

Trying to install the packages, linux-image-2.6-amd64 and linux-image-amd64 gives me nothing. It just installs the packages, but I get no new kernel to boot form.

What am I doing wrong here?

I’m running wheezy…

Thanks.

Kernel.org hacked, but Linux kernel safe thanks to git

Attackers compromised several servers at kernel.org using an off-the-shelf Trojan that appears to have entered via a compromised user credential. However, the source code for the Linux kernel does not appear to have been altered thanks to its “git” distributed revision control system, say kernel maintainers.

Copying OpenBSD Kernel from a non production to production machine

Hi All,

There are few OpenBSD 4.8 servers without compiler installed at my working place. However, sometimes there are some patches released for patching the kernel.

My question is: Can I setup a non production OpenBSD 4.8 server as a test machine with compiler installed and use it to patch the kernel and after the patching was successfull, I will copy the new kernel(with the patch installed) from the non production machine to the production machine?

Is there any impact?

Regards,
Stefan

In order to thoroughly understand what makes Linux tick and why it works so well on a wide variety of systems, you need to delve deep into the heart of the kernel. The kernel handles all interactions between the CPU and the external world, and determines which programs will share processor time, in what order. It manages limited memory so well that hundreds of processes can share the system efficiently, and expertly organizes data transfers so that the CPU isn’t kept waiting any longer than nece
